1. Workplace Health and Safety Representatives

Target Population

  • Workplace Health and Safety Representatives

Proposed Outcomes and Objectives

This course is designed to give the workplace safety representative an insight into his duties
and responsibilities and a practical way of implementing safety in his area of responsibility.
 
Course Content
  • Health and Safety Act 1996 overview
  • Duties and rights of the safety representative
  • Qualifications of the safety representative
  • Health and safety agreement
  • Health and safety committees
  • Meetings/ communications
  • Proper job instruction
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Accident/Incident cause & Investigations, Inspections & Observations
  • Hazard identification/risk assessment
  • Ventilation and refuge chambers
  • Strata control

  • Three days - 2 days theoretical training & 1 day practical exercises

2. Full Time Safety Representatives Course
 
Target Population
 
  • All persons who have been appointed as full-time safety representatives as per the
    Mine Safety and Health Act, 1996.
Proposed Outcomes and Objectives
 
This course is designed to give the full-time safety representative an insight into his duties and
responsibilities and a practical way of implementing safety in his area of responsibility.
Course Content
The accent will be on the practical training of safety representatives and the development of a

practical course leaders guide for such training.

The Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996 calls for the appointment of full-time safety representatives.
 
The functions these persons are entitled to perform include:
  • Co-ordinate the activities of the workplace (part-time) health & safety representatives in
    his area of jurisdiction.
  • Chair the employee representatives on the health and safety committee
     
  • Participate in training of the workplace health & safety representatives
    In order for these persons to carry out these functions correctly & effectively, they need to
    be properly trained in the techniques and principles of these functions.
The course content is as follows:
  • Functions and activities of health and safety representatives regarding:
  • Inspections
  • Observations
  • Accident/incident investigations
  • Communications
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Health and Safety committees/meetings
  • Coaching and training techniques
  • Hazard recognition and awareness with regard to:
    • Underground/surface fires
    • Environmental control - flammable gases/dust
    • Noise
    • Illumination
    • Radiation exposures
  • Basic principles of risk assessment
  • Role of the health and safety representative in regard of safety management systems

3. COMSOC I - Chamber of Mines Safety Officers Certificate
Who should attend
The course is intended for the Mine overseer, safety/loss control officer, shift boss, foreman or
line manager who must implement the mine's safety program
Objective
 
To provide the candidate with the knowledge and skill that will enable him to perform his legal functions and duties in respect of:
 
  • The identification of threats or potential threats to the safety & health of persons
  •  Accident investigation and reporting
  • Inspections and inspection frequencies
  • Identification of critical areas
  • Evaluation of training
  • Safety meetings
  • Application of the relevant Mine health and safety Act and Regulations
Subjects covered are :
 
1. Safety and Health Hazards related to:
 
  • Machine guards, small tools, scaffolding and lifting gear handling and storage of chemicals
  • Surface and underground fires
  • Electrical equipment earth leakage protection
  • Storage and use of gas and electrical welding equipment falls of ground and support methods
  • Trucks and tramway procedures
  • Coal dust and gasses
  • Environmental control procedures and practices
  • Flame proofing
2. Conducting of :
  • Thorough accident investigations
  • Legal inquiries into accidents and other matters

4. COMSOC II - Chamber of Mines Safety Officers Diploma
 
Who should attend
The course is intended for the Safety Officer, Mine Overseer, Shift boss or Line Manager who
has completed COMSOC I and will assist in furthering knowledge of implementation of the mine's

safety program.

 
Objective
The course will further the candidates knowledge of the requirements of the Health and Safety Act
& will help candidates in the functions of a Chief Safety officer's legal duties

5. Practical Risk Assessment (HIRA) Course
 
This course is aimed at supervisors & enables them to identify & assess risks the workplace & place
methods of control into the situation. It will give them in confidence to deal with the requirements
of the health and safety act with regard to the following:

6. Advanced Principles of Safety Management
Who should attend
This course is specifically aimed at the miner/panel miner, team leader and artisan.
Proposed outcomes and objectives:
  • Effective management of their respective sections and responsibilities in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act 1996
  • Effective implementation of safety and health practices in their respective workplaces
